Read, Write and Type
FINALLY, this wonderful CD is available again for the home market. While a bit pricey compared to other software packages, this is one of those 'not to be missed' programs. Read, Write and Type definately makes my 'top ten' list. If you have children who are learning to read, you will want to purchase this program.
Back in 1994, Read,
Write and Type hit the market with a big bang. Its "learn to read,
learn to write and learn to type all at once" theme was innovative
and lots of fun. This program did not go through many upgrades, but seemed
to be an eventual casualty in the software company melting pot of the late
90's. While TLC (Mattel) still carries this program, it is only available
to schools in a networked version. Enter Talking Fingers, the original developers.
They have recently made an enhanced version of this program available once
again to parents.
Enter the world of Lefty LaDee and Right way McKay. They will teach your
children each of the letters on the keyboard through fun stories and memorable
characters. Each key is taught as a sound, and not an isolated letter. Therefore,
all learning is very phonetic.

If you are not sure what your child is read for, be sure to pop in the Space Challenge CD, which contains numerous assessment activities 'disguised' as games. You will also be able to track your child's progress througout the program with much improved student tracking.
Using RW&T, your child will first learn the sounds of the letters, and quickly progress to words, and writing short stories. Throughout the program, Vexor the virus tries to thwart your child's advances, but everything is done in a very fun and encouraging manner. This is a great program for a child who may not have a lot of self-confidence.
Children who struggle with learning will do great here, as everything is taught in a multi-faceted approach. Every sense (with the exception of smell) is used to teach reading. Your children will learn PROPER keyboarding techniques without even realizing it.
The latest version of RW&T also contains helps for children whose first language is Spanish. More language helps will be added in later editions.
You will find two versions of this program on the Talking Fingers website. The Home version is $79, while the Deluxe Home version is $99. For the price difference I would stick with the basic version. For my money, I felt there was plenty in the $79 version.
If you are a phonics advocate, want your children to learn to type correctly, and are looking for an innovative way to teach your children to read, this is it! Don't miss this program while you can still get it!
