Oregon Trail has been a classic game since 1971. While Oregon Trail 3 was plagued with technical problems, and was met with mixed reactions, this new upgrade is very well done. Oregon Trail 4 will redeem the series reputation.

In case you have not played this game, the object is to put together a wagon party and make your way from Independence to Oregon. You will find challenges along the way such as sickness, weather, and some of your own making if you have not prepared well.

Major changes in this edition include:

Character interaction- More choices when talking to characters. They are more realistic, and also talk to you along the trail. You can get the advice of your team members at any time.

3D Graphics- The graphics have been greatly improved. While there were a few poor spots when crossing rivers, this is a great improvement. You can explore cities, and see out ahead on the trail, making decisions more realistic.

Create your own trail- You must now find your own way to Oregon. By utilizing guidebooks and maps, you must decide which route is best. This by far the biggest upgrade.

More historical content- As you talk with people in the town, they will tell you about the Donners, Lanford Hasting's infamous guidebook and more. You will meet up with characters such as Kit Carson, and have a chance to ask for their advice.

Better hunting etc.- There are more chances to hunt, fish or gather along the trail. While testers found the fishing a bit tough at first, these activities are much more realistic than in past editions.

This is a great upgrade, and one worth purchasing. Oregon Trail 4th Edition has gone a long way to recapture the fun and excitement of this classic game.

Bottom Line: A substantial upgrade to the series. Oregon Trail 4 is much better than the previous edition, and worth purchasing. Many technical problems have been cleared up.
