Final Fantasy VII

The Final Fantasy (FF7) series and it's developer, Square, have been pivotal in the history of RPGs (Role Playing Games). FF7 was a overwhelming hit on the Playstation, and now Eidos Interactive has ported (moved from one console to another) this masterpiece to the PC. With a classic Square story line, and very unique gameplay, this is definitely one to watch for... but it could have been better.

The story takes place in what at first seems like a post-apocalyptic world, but later we learn there is much more to this strange planet. The evil mega-corporation Shinra is draining the world's spiritual energy to power their massive machines and cities. Unfortunately, Shinra and it's controversial motives cause Avalanche, a rebellion group to form. You take on the role of Cloud Strife, a cold-hearted and emotionless mercenary who cares only about himself. After doing some work with Avalanche, Cloud discovers that his past is more complex than he originally thought. Due the extremely complex plot, this program may be more appropriate for older audiences. Less experienced gamers may enjoy the Zelda series on the Nintendo systems.

The gameplay in FF7 stands out as quite unique when compared to it's competition, (Might and Magic, Ultima, etc.). The Final Fantasy series is much more linear than the competition. This allows for better story telling. The real-time, turn based battle sequences are ingenious. This kind of battle may not interest arcade junkies used to using quick reflexes. It favors those who would rather think through the battle. Because the residents of this strange world live in a state of confusion and helplessness, be forewarned, their moral standards are not very high. There is swearing, and some mature themes which are a new "addition" to the Final Fantasy series.

Unfortunately the ride from the Playstation over to the PC wasn't all that smooth. After the first CD is put in, you will abruptly find that FF7 demands high performance PCs with 3D acceleration. The Playstation runs on a 33mhz CPU with only 2MB of RAM, yet FF7 looks better, sounds better, and plays more responsively on the Playstation than it does on a 200mhz PC with 98MB of RAM! And FF7 (PC) still maintains the frustrating save system that plagued it's Playstation counterpart. You have the chance to save your game every 15-20 minutes at "Save Points" throughout the game. Let's pray that Eidos does a better job translating FF8 when it comes around in '99!

FF7 is a great game... there's no denying this. But DON'T purchase this masterpiece if you have a 200mhz or lower without 3D acceleration. The graphics appear large and choppy if you don't have a high performance PC. Aside from that, thanks for pumping out a game and story like this one Square!

Bottom Line: Although the translation to the PC wasn't all that great, FF7 is still a killer game that will keep you busy for weeks!
